Botox and Dysport are two brands of botulinum toxin offered here at Taylor and Sullivan Plastic Surgery. They both temporarily improve wrinkles and frown lines and are similar in many ways, but have different formulations and dosages.
Although Botox and Dysport are most famous for their cosmetic uses with reducing fine lines on the face, they also has several other uses. They are commonly used to treat chronic migraines by being injected around the head and neck area. They can also treat excessive sweating known as hyperhidrosis by blocking the neurotransmitter that stimulates the sweat glands in the armpits. Patients with temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ), tooth grinding, or masseter muscle overgrowth, known as bruxism, also benefit from Botox and Dysport. They provide relief by relaxing overactive muscles and reducing pain and discomfort. Relaxing muscles of facial expression, botulinum toxin has also be found to be an important treatment for depression.
Botox
The term Botox comes from botulinum toxin, a naturally made protein that blocks muscle contraction and softens wrinkles. Botox is more concentrated than other forms of botulinum toxin such as Dysport. As it is very concentrated it is great for smaller areas, for example, wrinkles at the corner of the eyes known as “crow’s feet” or creases between the eyebrows referred to as “11s”. Botox usually takes about a week after procedure to kick in, a bit longer than Dysport, and lasts around three months.
Dysport
Dysport, is similar to Botox by blocking muscle contraction and relaxing wrinkles and strain of facial muscles. Dysport contains a slightly different protein which allows it to work more quickly Botox – as quickly as two to four days. Because Dysport is not a highly concentrated, many find the results to be smoother and more even. Like Botox, Dysport lasts around three months when the effect starts to fade and wrinkles slowly return. Most patients return every three months to maintain their more youthful and rested appearance.
A few of examples of how Botox and Dysport are used are as follows:
– Forehead lines
– Frown lines
– Crow’s feet
– Elevens
– Neck muscles
– Hyperhidrosis (sweating)
– Masseter muscle hypertrophy (bruxism)
– Temporalis muscle (migraine headaches)
– Depression
